Get ready, get set… GO VEGAN!

Maybe you’re asking yourself, what’s this vegan thing all about, and how do I learn more? What if I wanted to give it a shot… is it too late for me? (Not to worry—it’s never too late!)

People achieve their life goals when they’re ready. Like now, for you, as you begin to seek out ways to transition to a healthy, compassionate vegan lifestyle.

Becoming vegan is an individual journey. For some folks, it’s an overnight, one-and-done switch; for others, it’s a lot of questions, confusion, trial-and-error, and sometimes even exasperation. For me, it was a matter of moving from vegetarian—which I had been since 1987—to vegan many years later. You may find it a piece of (vegan molten chocolate lava) cake, or you may find it takes several attempts to find a way to be vegan that is comfortable for you. That’s where I can help.

What is vegan?

Vegan is a lifestyle that means embracing non-cruelty. As a diet, which is one aspect of being vegan, it is simply eating anything that is not an animal or anything that came from an animal. Example: dairy is from animals, and vegans have other ways of eating “dairy”—like from nuts or seeds.

Why be vegan?

Because it’s kind to animals, it’s good for human health, it’s the only sustainable way to feed a booming planet, and a healthy & sustainable food system is a social justice imperative. Being vegan ticks all the boxes.

How do I go vegan?

That’s the easy part! You’re already halfway there because you’re asking the question. Be kind and care about those around you—that’s step #1. Step #2 is find yourself a community that can support you. I’m here for that part. My diet has been animal-free for donkey’s years, and I’ve learned a thing or two about scrumptious eating in that time. I can help you too!

Going vegan can feel scary: What if my friends and family won’t be on board? How do I get enough protein? Can I ever eat out at a restaurant again?

The answers are simpler than it feels. Especially now, when restaurants are not only eager to offer excellent vegan dishes as part of their menu, but some great restaurants are 100% plant-based! Getting more than enough protein is achieved with a wide range of beans-legumes-grains. As for friends and family? Mine clamor for the exquisite foods that come out of my all-vegan kitchen, because plant-based eating is THAT GOOD!

When I was a starving undergrad student, I went vegetarian mostly because I couldn’t afford meat. Let’s face it: plants are cheap, animals are expensive. Then, after about 2 weeks of eating no animals, I noticed something: I had TONS more energy, I felt great, I was paying better attention to lectures, and I was thinking and writing more clearly.

That marked the time that I learned eating animals was not only unnecessary but also detrimental to my functioning. And I’ve never turned back.

The world used to be a scary place to go vegan. Now it’s much friendlier. So let’s get you set to live your wonderful vegan life.
